Scenes of prison violence and implied adult sexual situations, profanity, sexual innuendo, racial slurs, marijuana, drinking, nudity and hints of incest all earn the R rating as well.Īshton Kutcher (2000 PG-13 movie Dude, Where’s My Car? and TV’s That ’70s Show), an actor of little nuance and many grimaces, plays Evan, a psych major who uses his childhood journals to release memories of sexual and physical abuse by a friend’s father (Eric Stoltz). A troubled boy beats people brutally with planks and burns a captured dog in a sack (again, not graphically shown). The film includes startling violence, including the strongly implied death of a mother and infant. Often revisited in flashbacks, the scene is vile without any revelatory depth. Child characters are shown with an abusive, liquor-swilling adult who asks them to undress and act like married people for his camera. A ludicrous hybrid - call it a psycho-slasher/science fiction/romance - it is not for high schoolers younger than 17. Lurid, sophomoric and graceless, The Butterfly Effect exploits tough subjects of child abuse, pedophilia and repressed memory while pretending to examine them. Smitten, Tad follows her back to West Virginia, where Pete, who secretly adores Rosie, tries to get her attention. Rosalee wins and dines with Tad in Los Angeles, blithely popping out her retainer at the trendy restaurant. But Tad, we learn, is also a promiscuous, drunk-driving jerk whose agent and publicist (Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes) launch the win-a-date contest to cleanse his image. Their store manager Pete (Topher Grace) thinks Tad’s a phony. Sweet-natured Piggly Wiggly checkout clerks Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth) and her pal (Ginnifer Goodwin) have crushes on movie star Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). Directed in likably low-key style and performed by a crackerjack cast, it will delight teen girls in particular with its warmth and wit, while parents will appreciate its down-to-earth stance. A nifty romantic confection, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! spoofs both Hollywood pretensiousness and small-town naivete.
